Neil Hadfield
Description
Neil graduated in Illustration from the Royal College of Art in 1987 and subsequently worked as a freelance Illustrator for numerous publications including The Observer Newspaper and Pan Books. As Neil's career developed, so did his interest in animation and he began working for production companies in London, principally: Sherbet, Studio AKA, Bermuda Shorts, Grand Slamm and Slinky Pics. Neil worked mostly on concept, background artwork and in character animation for TV commercials, music promo's and title sequences, but has also worked as an Effects Animator on film projects for Warner Brothers, Disney and the BBC. Neil's work is narrative centred and has a strong contemporary Illustrative feel.
Neil taught at Birmingham City University from 2001 until 2009, beginning as Subject Leader in Animation and Moving Image before designing and creating new awards in Animation and Animation for Games Design, eventually becoming Course Director in 2007. This role included him in the development of the curriculum and delivery of Visual Communication modules at both SIA Singapore and IVE Hong Kong. In addition to this Neil developed a strong and well resourced digital animation capability at BCU, including Motion Control, Motion Capture and developing links with industry partners both regionally and nationally. This has led to him being involved in numerous 'live' projects and his students have won many awards for their work, including commendations from the Royal Television Society, prizes from D&AD, contributions to The Rolling Stock Animation Project and regular input at the FLIP Animation Festival.
Neil moved to Hereford College of Arts in 2009 and is now working as Course Co-ordinator for Illustration and Animation as part of their Media Arts Higher Education programme.
He lives in Shropshire with his partner Marion Elliot and their daughter Stella.
