Festival Launch – Animation in the West Midlands: A Snapshot

Millennium Point, Birmingham, 7:00pm – 9:00pm, 5th November 2009
Cost: Free

In this special launch event, we'll be asking what's the current state of the West Midlands' animation industry? How can we help the sector develop and expand at a time of recession?

This event, co-hosted by Flip, Birmingham City University and Animation Forum West Midlands, seeks to find out. It'll include a screening of work from leading animation studios and individual filmmakers and a panel focussing on some of the achievements and highlights from the region.

The panel will include Chris Randall from Second Home Productions, who pioneered an innovative replacement animation technique and Andy Guest from The CharacterShop, who are involved in a number of international co-production projects. This is a great opportunity to find out more about animation in the region, and to join the debate about how to help the sector develop and expand.

The free event takes place at Technology Engineering and the Environment (formerly the Technology and Innovation Centre), Millennium Point, Birmingham. To reserve a place, please RSVP to info@light-house.co.uk.

The Flip Animation Challenge

Following on from The Great Animation Challenge, this year's festival has become a bit more hands on, giving people the opportunity to write scripts and make films during the festival itself! Here's the challenge:

  • On the 5th November, Flip will host a one day scriptwriting for animation workshop leading each participant to produce a 60 second script.
  • These scripts will be posted onto the Vimeo group at the end of the day and passed onto animators in residence at the festival.
  • You will have a day and a bit to turn a script into a film!
  • The deadline for posting your films on Vimeo will be 4pm, 7 November. They will then be screened later that evening between 7pm and 7.15pm at Light House.
