The CharacterShop launched in 2002 as an independent animation studio and production company specialising in high quality 3D & 2D computer animation and design and digital effects projects for a wide range of screen media, including film, television, web and mobile phones. Mark Vale and Paul Howell run this award winning company from its custom built facility situated on the canal-side in the heart of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter.
Recent work has included 3D animation for the CBBC children's series Friends and Heroes, newly animated stories of Knight Rider – the former iconic 70's TV series produced entirely in-house for mobile phone distributor Payer X – and Zoo Troop; a cartoon film produced at CharacterShop for Bourne Leisure Group and due for release in 2008.
The CharacterShop has won awards at the Annecy and Holland Animation Festivals, as well as Promax UK, BDA (USA) and Royal Television Society, in addition to a number of business awards.
Animation East is East Anglia's no.1 website for all things animation related.
We take an inclusive view of animation. Most of us know that the word no longer refers to just cartoons. But until a better word comes along we decided to stick with animation, and hope that the meaning can continue to expand to include all the disciplines, practices, techniques and genres that are associated with animation today. So you'll see content on the site not just for traditional animation, but also games, motion graphics, flash and other related areas.
We are principally funded by FDMX (Film and Digital Media Exchange) and there is some crossover in our remit. Animation is increasingly a global industry, so we do look further afield than the eastern region for some our content. At present, many animators who live in the east rely on work from London or abroad. We want to help them to find ways to use their talents without having to go elsewhere, and to bring new work to the region to establish a creative animation industry in the east.
