UK Film Council Abolished
26/07/2010
The UK Film Council, the body that partly funds regional screen agencies such as Screen WM, is to be scrapped in the latest round of Government cuts.
Distributing Lottery funds, the organisation has invested in over 900 films since being founded in 2000. It employed 75 people.
According to the BBC, "Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt said he wanted to establish a "direct and less bureaucratic relationship with the British Film Institute."
The body helped fund films such as In The Loop, Bend It Like Beckham and The Last King of Scotland.
The news comes as a blow for the English animation industry, with many studios already losing out on international productions due to more favourable tax incentives and support offered in countries such as France, Ireland and Canada.
